From Warkworth to Bamburgh (Day 6)

Distance Travelled: 28.6m. Elevation Gain 1,055ft Today was a perfect day for cycling. Sunny, a tail wind for most of the way and a really pleasant temperature of about 21c. Only when we came towards the end of the ride did we battle against a much stronger blustery headwind.
The ride took us along the coast and meandered through coastal farmland on a long and winding cycle track. It was a delight when we turned a corner and saw, across the fields, our first glimpse of Alnmouth.
We detoured into the town and sat and enjoyed the view of St Cuthbert's Cross, which marks the legendary spot where St Cuthbert agreed to become Bishop of Lindisfarne (Holy Island).
As we were leaving the town I could not resist capturing the poppies in all their glory, set against the beautiful Aln Estuary in the background.
From there it was onwards (and upwards! ) to Craster, which is famous worldwide for its oak- smoked kippers and the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Did you know that at the cafe in the car park you can enjoy a kipper burger. (We made do with a cuppa' and a slice of carrot cake!) However, lucky dogs can have free kipper skins!
So, lunch at Seahouses, sitting in the sunshine overlooking the Farne Islands ( hence the name Lindisfarne) and then onwards to Bamburgh, and the first sight of the extraordinary Bamburgh Castle in all it's glory. The original castle here defended England against the Anglo Saxons.
Although it was supposed to be a much shorter ride today, because we detoured several times to explore, it ended up being nearly 30miles. Lots of short steep inclines but after those long and psychopathic hills in the Pennines, these were a piece of cake. The only downside (excuse the pun) of the day was that I got shat on from a great height! My pristine white blouse ended up with a 3D brown and white abstract artwork all over the front which can only have come from a HUGE seagull!
